Progress in this class will be measured by students’ mastery of the required English Language Arts Standards for high school students. Mastery of a standard entails meeting or exceeding expectations laid out in the standard specific rubric. Mastery is determined by what a student can accomplish independent of guidance from any other individual and must be demonstrated on more than one occasion. Once students have reached the point of mastery on each of the standards, they will be considered for college level English courses. Each student’s current level of proficiency will be different and should be viewed as such. Students will frequently update a standards tracking sheet and be responsible for focusing on the standards that they have not yet achieved mastery in. One-on-one meeting time will be built into the semester schedule to discuss student progress, to aid students in prioritizing their focuses, and to develop strategies for improving weaknesses.
